Everything starts with WHY!  by Stephanie Wolfe, NBC-HWC

Everything starts with why, and the stronger the why the more chance of success.

What we do – is very important!  BUT WHY we do WHAT we do is powerful!

Our WHY fuels our WHAT! (think about it for a moment)

Personal Story: When our grandson was 6 years old, he swallowed a small rock and we had to take him to the hospital to have the rock retrieved. What do you think was the first question each of us (including the ER doctor) asked him?  WHY DID YOU DO THAT?  His answer? “I don’t know.”

Now, most WHYs are a bit more serious than that, but you may be surprised that when I conduct my 60-minute Healthy Living Assessments with client, I sent them a 3-page Assessment Profile so that I can get a picture of where they have been, where they are now, and where they want to go.  What I find surprising is the amount of supplements, over-the-counter drugs, and prescription drugs they are taking!  But that’s NOT what is MOST surprising to me.  What IS most surprising to me is that many do not know WHY they are taking half of the things they are swallowing!!  This is dangerous! Least of all, wasteful!  Much of it is just expensive urine!

Every year – 35 BILLION DOLLARS is spent on supplements, vitamins, minerals, etc.

  1. BE SURE you know what you really NEED – not just a celebrity mentioned it, or your co-worker is taking it, or it was pretty colors . . . MARKETING! – Show me the science. Dr. Bill

I take supplements, and I will share on the topic soon, but no matter what you take – remember it is a SUPPLEMENT – not a REPLACEMENT! Know the supplements that are worth your money!

  1. Know WHY! What is it supposed to be helping? Is it helping? Hope is not a strategy!
  2. Can you get it from real food? Educate yourself by going to www.wholefoodhealthcoach.com and sign up for our newsletter, and you will get an article I wrote sharing what FOODS have some of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals you may need. See if there is a way to get your “fix” from the REAL FOOD section of your local grocery store! You have to buy food anyway, so buy food that supports your health and wellness!  (more on this later) Rx – Recipe

BACK TO WHY – Definitions: Motive – a reason for doing something  Reason – a Cause of action

Last week, I mentioned the acronym – DARN CATS

D – desire (a strong feeling of wanting something that you do not have)

A – ability (possession of the means or skill to do something you want to do)

R – reason (facts to form a judgement for something you want to do)

N – need (require something that is essential or very important, a necessity)

C – commitment (quality of being dedicated or devoted to a cause or activity)

A – action (the process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim)

T – time (available, allotted period where something should happen or be done)

S – sincerity (genuineness, truthfulness, honest, free from pretense, deceit, or hypocrisy)

At The Whole Food Health Coach, we believe in you, and we know that your Why is a key component to success in any area of our lives, yet NOWHERE IS our “WHY” MORE IMPORTANT than in our health and wellness!

We are very busy people, but life isn’t about what we get done, it’s about why we do it. For some it’s just to get the paycheck at the end of the week, but for others of us, the motive is stronger than that.  It means something to us.  Your health choices should be TOP OF MIND, because it should mean something to you!

It is what makes work doable and makes life meaningful.  We may love what we do for a living, but we do it more likely because we love Why we do it.  The benefits we receive from a job well done, or the acknowledgement from customers or superiors can be a strong Why, but the salary and benefits are a plus, but even more important is what the paycheck provides for us.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a 5-teir model of human needs.  He shows the foundation as food, water, warmth, and rest, followed by security and safety, accomplishment, and reaching our full potential.  All very important aspects of a healthy life.  I would agree that our WHY for working is strongly connected to our love having a roof over our heads, food in our stomach, water to quench our thirst, and sleep to reboot our body.  But there is more to living a healthy life than eating and sleeping. That’s a start, but to truly WORK WELL let’s dedicate ourselves to our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and wellness.

As a health and wellness coach, it is my pleasure to assist my clients in the creation of a personal Wellness Vision. And to partner with them to achieve the vision they create for themselves – one goal at a time, with action steps towards the goal.

Question: How would you eat an elephant?  Answer: One bite at a time.

Not that we eat elephants at all, but being the largest of creatures, the principle is that we would not do it in one gulp.  That is true of our wellness vision.  There is no magic pill, and none of us have a magic wand, but we can dream, design, create, and walk the path each day to get where we want to go.

We may wish there was an easier way, but there is really no reward in that.  The only benefit of something that is easy, is that it is easy.  Let’s face it, in most cases our health and wellness challenges didn’t happen overnight, and they likely will not disappear overnight.

Slow and steady wins the race (just ask the tortoise and the hair).

Let’s work together to create your Wellness Vision! It’s painless, and very fun for most participants.  I simply ask some cultivating questions to till up the soil a bit.  My questions aren’t magic either; the real magic is in your answers to the questions.  Your thoughts that are generated are like seeds for the soil.
